Extra Credit (Wolves)

To get extra credit in my class simply go to www.newsela.com and sign up for a free student account (maybe make your username and password the same as MobyMax to help remember it).  When you sign up, make sure to enter the class code to get connected to my class:
  • 4th grade = PJUNN
  • 5th grade = UZDYL
Once that's done you can check the Newsela Binder button to see what articles I've assigned - or you can simply find one that interests you on your own.  If you're having trouble understanding an article you can adjust it's difficulty using the blue bar on the right side of the screen.  If it's too easy, you can challenge yourself by increasing the difficulty as well (note: I see which one you choose when you submit your work!).  Most articles have a quiz at the end - that quiz is your extra credit and all you have to do is fill it out online.

4th Grade Extra Project - Jose Limon

Your story this week was a biography of the male dancer and choreographer, Jose Limon.  Think about how you visualized, or pictured in your mind, Jose dancing as you read the story.  Think about some of the descriptive language the text used to describe how he moved on the stage and how it made him feel.  Got it?  Good.

Now, click on the link to read more about Jose Limon and watch him perform one of his most famous dances: Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias.

When you're done, log into Penzu and write a response telling me about what you saw.  Was Jose's dance different than how you'd imagined it when you were reading?  If so, how?  How would you describe this dance to someone who had never seen Jose Limon dance?  Use descriptive language in your response!

4th Grade Extra Project: Me and Uncle Romie

Completed your work?  Then come explore a bit more about your reading!  This week's story, Me and Uncle Romie, is a fiction story based on the work of 20th century artist Romare Bearden.

First, look at some of Bearden's art here:  The Metropolitan Museum of Art - Romare Bearden

Next, think of a person, place, thing, or event that was important to your life and create your own collage here:  National Gallery of Art - Collage Machine.  Enjoy!

"The Block"

Part 2: Vocabulary

  • Practice vocabulary & take practice test (5-10 min.)

Unit 2

Part 1: Spelling

For this station you will be going on to spelling city and practicing your new words, just like last time.

  1. Take 5-10 minutes to look them over and play spelling games, then take a practice test.
  2. If you score 80% or higher move on to Vocabulary, if you score less than 80% go back and practice some more until you are able to score 80% or higher.

Part 2: Vocabulary

Unit 1

4th & 5th Grade

Directions:  Click on the page above for Spelling City and select your grade level spelling list.

Next, go through the list and click on any words you don't know so you can hear what they sound like.  Then click on the green "Play a Game" button and use the free activities to practice your spelling words.

After you've practiced your words for a while (20 min. at least guys - come on), click on "Spelling Test" to see how you do.  You'll know you're done when you can score a 100% without looking at your list.

If any of this is confusing, watch the tutorial video here:

Unit 8 (4th & 5th Grade)

Activity: Science Fair

Skill / Objective (record in passport):  Title Page, Acknowledgements, Bibliography

__________________________

Directions:  At this station you will be completing the written report for your science fair projects.  Remember, non-competitive students do not need to type their title page, acknowledgements, or bibliography.

I.  Title Page

Students need to have a title that reflects their science project. This is not the problem. Type only the project title; Center the project title.  Do not type name or any other information on this paper. Students should include graphics, clip art, or pictures on the Title Page.

V.  Acknowledgements

The student gives credit to anyone who has helped them during the project. It is not a list of names, but a short paragraph stating the names of people who helped the student, and how they helped.

VI.  Bibliography

Properly formatted list of all sources and reference materials the students has used.

Unit 7 (4th & 5th Grade)

Directions:  At this station you will be reviewing what tasks you can be working on for your science fair project.  Go through this list, completing the items in order.  Some of these will require you to use this computer, others will not.  If there is a task on this list you can complete at your desk instead of on the computer please do so and allow another student to use this computer.  Thanks!

Written Report

IV. Experimental Design:

III.  Table of Contents

II.  Abstract

Can only be done when your experiment is complete. It gives a summary of the project in a brief, but thorough paragraph form.  This is a one page, 250-word maximum summary of the entire project that includes the components below.  Judges and the public should have a fairly accurate idea of the project after reading the abstract. It should summarize the purpose, procedure, results and conclusions of the student’s investigation; therefore, it is one of the last items done.  An abstract does not give details about the materials used unless it greatly influenced the procedure or had to be developed to do the investigation. An abstract should only include procedures done by the student.  Work done by someone else (scientist) must not be included. Place a copy of the abstracton the display board and in the written report binder.

Abstract Components:  (write in paragraphs)

1. Purpose: The statement that explains why the student is doing the experiment
2. Problem: The question telling what the student is trying to find out.
3. Hypothesis: An explanation of what prompted the student’s research, and what the student hopes to achieve, and what the student thinks the outcome might be (before doing the experiment).
4. Procedures: A brief summary of how the experiment was performed & the key points
5. Results: A brief description of the important results that lead directly to the student’s conclusion-do not give too many details or include tables or graphs of data.
6. Conclusions: A brief summary paragraph of why the experiment had those results and if your hypothesis was correct or incorrect.
7.Appplications:  A brief summary paragraph of how you think your results can be used by others and what you would differently in future experiments on this topic.

Unit 3 - 4 (4th & 5th)

Activity Name: Preparing for Background Research

Skill / Objective: Research Plan

Unit 2 (4th & 5th Grade)

Activity:  Scientific Fair Start off
Skill / Objective: (copy in passport) Choosing a Science Fair Topic

____________________________________________________

Directions:
  1. Click on the link below to begin the Topic Wizard, this program will help you select a science fair topic that is both interesting and appropriate.
  2. You will need to know a few things to get started:  Your science fair project is due in more than a month, and your zip code is 34288.
  3. Answer the questions and choose a science fair project from the list that's provided.  If you already have a science fair project you can use that too, but you need to think about the following FIRST:
    • Is this project too hard or too easy for me?  If it is, you need to find a different topic.
    • Is there a specific question that this project tries to answer using a fair test?  A fair test is an experiment in which only one factor, or variable, is changed.  If you can't do a fair test, you need to find another topic.
    • Does this project involve factors or traits that can be measured with a number?  If not, you need to find another topic.
    4.  Once you've chosen a topic print it out.  Next, take out a Science Fair Proposal Form to fill out and
get it signed by your teacher and a parent.
